Cavaliers Down Cedarville, 3-1, in G-MAC Tournament Opener

NORTH CANTON, Ohio - The Walsh volleyball team advanced to the Great Midwest Athletic Conferece Tournament semifinals with a 3-1 win over Cedarville on Tuesday night.

The Cavaliers (19-13) were led by Paola Ferrario and Lauren Loucks with 14 kills apiece. Amanda Adoranti led the team with 22 digs, while Olivia Zanolli handed out 37 assists in the win.

Cedarville, which season ends with a 13-18 record, was paced by Taylor Wilkerson and Lauren Willow with nine kills each. Autumn Foust recorded 16 digs and Sierra Schuitema dished out 30 assists in a losing effort.

Set 1 - Cedarville led early in the first set, 2-1, but the Cavaliers put together a furious 11-4 run to take a commanding 12-6 lead and force a Yellow Jacket timeout. Cedarville closed to within a point at 21-20 before the Cavs scored four-straight points to claim the first set, 25-20.

Set 2 - The second set mirrored the first in that Walsh fell behind early, trailing 6-4 after the first 10 serves. Again, the Cavs found their stride and rattled off 11 of the next 12 points to go ahead 15-7. The Maroon and Gold capped the set by scoring the last five points of the frame and winning 25-11.

Set 3 - Walsh found itself with a 6-2 deficit in the third set, but battled back to tie the set at 8-8 and eventually take a 12-9 lead. Six-straight Cedarville points put the Jackets on top 19-14 late in the set. The Cavaliers crawled to within two, 22-20, by scoring five of six points, but would get no closer, dropping the set 25-20.

Set 4 - Cedarville looked to force a fifth set and took an early 5-1 advantage. Walsh answered with an important 5-1 run to tie the set at 6-6. The Cavs opened a 19-11 lead deep into the fourth, but the pendulum of momentum swung back to Cedarville when the Jackets score seven-straight to bring the score to 19-18. A kill from Zanolli put and end to the run and started a 6-1 run by the Cavaliers to close out the match, 25-19.

The Cavaliers will travel to Hillsdale, Mich. to take on No. 2 seed Findlay on Friday, Nov. 9 at 7:30 p.m.
