Volleyball Falls In Season Opening Matches

(SPRINGFIELD, Ill.) – The 2018 season opened up today for the Walsh volleyball team against Illinois-Springfield and Northern Michigan in the Capital Classic Presented By Crowne Plaza/Holiday Inn Express. Both opponents proved to be tough matchups for the Cavaliers as they were swept 3-0 in both contests. 

The opening match saw Walsh take on the hosts of the Capital Classic in Illinois-Springfield. The Maroon and Gold battled the Prairie Stars throughout, but fell in all three sets by scores of 25-20.

Lauren Loucks led the attack with 16 kills for match-high honors. Olivia Zanolli picked up where she left off last year and provided 33 assists while setting up the offense.

Defensively Amanda Adoranti led both teams with 22 digs while Paola Ferrario joined her in double-figures with 11. Justine Coffman came up with three blocks on the front line to lead the team.

The nightcap pitted the Cavs up against former conference foe Northern Michigan. Walsh took the Wildcats to the wire in the opening frame, but eventually fell 25-21 before it dropped the second two sets 25-16 and 25-15.

Loucks once again led the attack with 10 kills while Zanolli provided 25 assists. Adoranti tallied 21 digs for match-high honors.

The Cavs will be back in action tomorrow with another pair of contests. Walsh will be opposite against McKendree in the opening match at 10 a.m. and will close the tournament that evening against Missouri Western State at 6:30.
