(NORTH CANTON, Ohio) Malone (12-12, 9-5) defeated Walsh (2-20, 2-12) in four sets in a Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference match at Alumni Arena tonight by set scores of 25-20, 25-20, 23-25 and 25-21. The win gave the Pioneers a season sweep over the Cavs. Walsh returns to action on Friday when they travel to the University of Findlay for a 7 pm match.
Walsh jumped to an early 3-0 lead in the opening set. After Malone tied the set at 4-all it was close the rest of way featuring 11 ties, the last at 16-all. Malone took the lead for good on a Walsh error, and then ran off six straight points to take a 22-16 lead. Walsh would close to 23-19, but would get no closer.
After dropping the second set 2-0, Walsh rallied to win the third set 25-23. Walsh trailed 9-4 and 12-7 when they went on a 7-2 run to tie the match at 14-all. Walsh would take the lead for good at 16-15 and then hang on for the win. Kelsey Snider, Gina Kramer and Liza Pflugradt had key kills down the stretch.
Malone raced to a 13-5 lead in the fourth set, and led 19-11 before Walsh climbed back into the match to close to with three points at 22-19 and 23-20 on key kills from Kramer and Katy Frease. Malone would regroup however to register the 25-20 win. The victory was number 400 for Malone Head Coach Tonya Hockman.
