(SAULT STE. MARIE, Mich) Walsh (1-14, 1-9) defeated Lake Superior State University (2-13, 1-9) in a Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference match in four sets to register their first win of the season. The Cavs won by scores of 25-20, 27-29, 25-20 and 25-23. Walsh looks to make it two straight when they play at Northwood University at 5pm on Saturday.
Walsh trailed early in the first set before tying the set at 5-5, and taking the lead for good at 6-5. The Cavs led 16-10 when LSSU closed to 18-15. Walsh then ran off five straight points, three on kills by Kelsey Snider, to take a 1-0 set lead.
The Cavs led 14-10 in the second set, but eventually fell 29-27. The third set was the key to the match. After dropping set two, Walsh raced to a 10-4 lead, and held on when the Lakers closed to within to 20-19 to win 25-20.
The fourth set was all Walsh. The Cavs trailed just once at 1-0, and never trailed after taking a 2-1 lead.
The Cavs balanced attack produced many heroes in their first win. Haley Howell handed out 53 assists. Freshman Gina Kramer led with 16 kills. Snider had 15 kills, a .312 attack percentage and 11 digs. Kelly Miller had nine kills, a .368 attack percentage and four block assists. Liza Pflugradt also had nine kills, to go with five block assists. Katy Frease added eight kills and two solo blocks.
Katilin Bronikowski, who is among the GLIAC league leaders, had 19 and Emilee Muzechuk added 13.
