Cavs Battle; But Fall in Three to Wayne State

(NORTH CANTON, Ohio) Walsh fell to 0-11 overall, and to 0-7 in the Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference after falling to Wayne State University (8-3, 5-2) in three sets by the scores for 25-10, 25-21 and 25-20. Walsh returns to action on Tuesday night when they host Alderson Broaddus at 6 p.m.

Wayne State raced to an 11-1 lead in taking control of the first set, on their way to a 25-10 first set win. Walsh would cut the lead to 15-7, but would get no closer.

Walsh challenged to Wayne State to the wire in set two before falling 25-21. The set was tight from start-to-finish, with Walsh holding leads midway through at 12-10 and 13-11. After Wayne State knotted the set at 13-all, there would be four ties, the final one at 17-all before the visitors took the lead for good at 16-15. Walsh kept the set close and trailed 22-21 when WSU scored the sets final three points to take a 2-0 set lead.

Walsh again battled Wayne State in third set, but fell 25-20. Once again the set was close throughout, with holding leads of 10-5 and 15-13. It was at this point that WSU took control of the set with 6-1 run to lead 19-16. Walsh would close to within 19-18 on kills from Katy Frease and Kelsey Snider, but would get no closer.

Devin Hummel paced Walsh with seven kills and Snider added six kills and eight digs. Haley Howell handed out 22 assists and Kaitlin Bronikowski had 10 digs. Frease had five block assists.
