SLIPPERY ROCK, Pa. - The Walsh women's soccer team opened the 2019 season with an early goal and the defense helped hold it in a 1-0 victory over Slippery Rock University on Thursday (Sept. 5) evening at Mihalik-Thompson Stadium.
Hannah Bowman scored the lone goal of the game in the seventh minute and it stuck throughout the final 83 minutes of the contest.
Walsh had the first scoring chance when Sabrina Ortenzi fed the ball to Bowman on a corner kick. Bowman tapped it in the lower left corner of the goal as Walsh took a 1-0 lead six minutes into the game.
The Cavaliers defense held tough as the Rock took 15 shots with Mickey McClanahan making ten saves in goal.
Walsh has won the last two season openers and Lauren Lewicki got her first head coaching win at Walsh.
The home opener will take place on Sunday (Sept. 8) as the Cavaliers host Southern Indiana at 1:00 PM. Coverage of the game will be on the Great Midwest Digital Network.
