(NORTH CANTON, Ohio) - The Walsh Cavaliers Women's basketball team traveled right down the road this afternoon to take on the Malone Pioneers in the 23rd Annual Mayors' Cup matchup. The Mayors' Cup remains in the hands of Walsh following a 67-57 victory.
Both teams got out to a slow start as the game remained scoreless until almost the three minute mark, when Malone scored two to get things rolling. It was a tight game defensively in the first quarter, the Cavs were down two heading into the second quarter, 17-15. Mayci Sales led a dominating performance in the first half leading the Cavaliers with five rebounds. Two-time G-MAC Player of the Week, Quionche Carter, led the first quarter for the Cavs with six total points and two boards.
The Maroon and Gold snapped the trading of baskets with a run in the middle of the third quarter, led by Sales six point swing during that period. Walsh entered the fourth quarter up 43-40. The Cavaliers gained momentum with just over six minutes to play in the game when Sales scored in the post, blocked a shot on the defensive end, then passed it ahead to Megan Ball who knocked down the three. Kimmie Borck then connected from behind the arc during the Cavalier's following possesion, to push the score to 56-52 with under five minutes to play. Ball had an offensive rebound and put back to push the lead to 58-52, then Clopton connected on a pair of free throws to give the Cavs their largest lead of the contest up to that point, 60-52. Borck secured the win for the Cavs, draining three of four free throws in the last minute of the contest.
The trio of Borck, Carter, and Sales lead the Cavalier's offense with 16, 15, and 12 points, respectively. Sales and Clopton both had a team-best seven boards apiece. Ball came off the bench to contribute six points and six rebounds in one of the best games of her young career.
Sydney Wentling led the Pioneers with 17 points.
The Cavaliers end their season with two home games this week, starting with Lake Erie on Thursday, Feb. 28 and Ursuline on Saturday, March 2. Saturday's game is senior day.
