Late Cavaliers Rally Falls Short, 67-66

PAINESVILLE, Ohio – The Walsh Cavaliers women's basketball team dropped a close battle to the Lake Erie Storm on Monday (Jan. 21) afternoon by a final score of 67-66.  

Mayci Sales and Quionche Carter gave the Cavaliers an early 4-0 lead with back-to-back layups one-minute in. After Lake Erie tied the game at six, Kimmie Borck put the Cavaliers a 9-6 lead with her first three pointer of the day. With an 11-10 advantage, Walsh went on a 5-0 run with a Borck three pointer and a Lexie Scarton layup. The Cavaliers led 16-10 with 1:19 to go in the quarter and went on to lead 16-14 after one frame.  

Lake Erie opened the second quarter on a 16-4 run as the Cavaliers trailed by ten with 3:37 left to play before halftime. Walsh ended the half on a 7-2 run, as they trimmed the lead to 32-27. Borck had four points on the run, including a steal and score. The Cavaliers trailed by five at the break.  

The teams went back and forth in the opening of the second half before Lake Erie pushed the lead to nine with 5:27 to go in the third. Walsh answered with a 7-0 run, slimming the Storm's lead to two as Borck nailed a three, and Sales and Clopton both had layups during the run. Lake Erie led by four until Walsh tied the game at 47 on a three-point play by Borck. Lake Erie regained a 49-47 lead just before the third quarter buzzer sounded.  

Lake Erie led 54-49 one minute into the fourth quarter before the Cavaliers rallied once again. Hannah Blake made a three pointer, Scarton followed with a layup to tie the game. Brittni Clopton put the Cavaliers up 56-54 with a layup. The teams exchanged baskets until back-to-back baskets put the Storm up 63-60 with 3:14 left. Borck made her fourth three ball of the day, tying the game at 63 seconds left. Lake Erie regained a three-point lead late. Walsh cut the lead to one within the final minute but the rally fell short. The Cavaliers fell 67-66 to the Storm.  

Borck tied a career-high with 21 points, including four three pointers. Sales had a double-double with 15 points and a career-high 14 rebounds. Clopton added ten points and seven rebounds off the bench.  

Walsh will return home to the friendly confines of Alumni Arena for a G-MAC doubleheader against Alderson Broaddus on Thursday (Jan. 24).
