Cavs Take Down Fighting Scots in First Meeting

(NORTH CANTON, Ohio) – Walsh outlasted a scrappy Ohio Valley squad by a score of 64-48 in the final game before Christmas break Thursday evening. The Cavaliers (6-5, 3-2) jumped back over .500 in their first meeting with the Fighting Scots (0-8, 0-3).

Both teams played back-and-forth basketball in the first quarter, but Walsh started to pull away in the second and third. After a Zae Sellers layup gave the visitors an 18-17 lead, the Cavs went on a 15-4 run to take control of the game. Walsh would never trail again.

A steal by Alex Hocstedler followed by a layup by Jill Blacksten assisted by Kimmie Borck on the fast break gave the Cavs the lead for good with 7:33 to go in the second quarter.

OVU pulled within four once more after Jordan Fox made a 3-pointer to open the second half, but Walsh answered with baskets by Mayci Sales and Dominique Foley.

Foley had the best game of the day as she led with a game-high 14 points on 5-of-8 shooting from the field. She was the only player to reach double-figures on the day. Holly Grober and Emily Westphal were close to joining her with nine. Grober led the game with eight rebounds.

The Cavs did well on defense in forcing most of the Fighting Scots' 25 turnovers. That helped translate into an 18-12 advantage in points off miscues. Walsh dominated inside with a 38-24 lead on points in the paint.

Walsh will return to action in a little over two weeks when it hosts Cedarville on Saturday, Dec. 30. Tip-off is set for 3 p.m.
