Women's Basketball Takes On Zips In Exhibition Saturday

(AKRON, Ohio) – On Saturday, the Walsh women's basketball team will unofficially start the season with Akron in an exhibition. It's the second season in a row that the Cavaliers will exhibition with a Division I opponent and third since the 2013-14 campaign.

Last season, the Maroon and Gold pulled off a 70-68 overtime upset over Butler in the legendary Hinkle Fieldhouse. Walsh also holds an 89-80 victory over Kent State from the 2013-14 season.

This year Walsh, under the new guidance of Head Coach Kate Bruce, looks to make it three-in-a-row with its contest against the Zips in James A. Rhodes Arena at noon on Saturday.

Coach Bruce has experience going up against the Zips as she came to the Cavs as the first assistant under Walsh alum Bob Boldon at Ohio University. She'll have a wealth of experience returning in her current lineup as Walsh returns all but one starter from last year's 20-9 team that advanced to the GLIAC semifinals.

The lone starter gone is Kelsey Funderburgh who averaged 14 points per game, but five letter winners from last year's team started 16 or more games. Included in that group is Brooklyn Wooten, the second-leading scorer from the team who averaged 10.2 points per game. Alex Hochstedler and Brittni Clopton also averaged close to double digits with 9.7 and 9.6 points per game, respectively.

Clopton is also the team's top rebounder as she pulled down 8.3 caroms per game. Wooten followed at 4.5 rebounds per game and led the team with 3.7 assists per game.
