Men's Track Solid at Grand Valley and Oberlin

NORTH CANTON, Ohio – The Walsh track and field teams competed at Grand Valley State and Oberlin this weekend and had some solid performances between the two venues.

"We are definitely excited with the performances this weekend," said head coach Rob Mizicko.

Dante Penza took advantage of all five throws in the shot put as he won on a final throw of 15.98 meters, finishing nearly nine feet ahead of second place.

In the weight throw, Walsh was represented with four of the top five finishers. Jacob Ott was first on a throw of 16.39 meters. Bucyrus Palo finished second on a throw of 15.99 meters. Bradley Gallitz was third (15.91 meters) and Gabriel Miller placed fifth, throwing 15.07 meters.

At Grand Valley State, Varney Pelima was sixth in the triple jump on a 13.40-meter jump. James Miller finished seventh in the shot put invite with a throw of 16.37 meters.

On Saturday, James Miller hit a NCAA D2 Provo mark in the open shot put at Grand Valley State. He finished fifth with a throw of 16.08 meters.

Saturday featured another phenomenal performance by the distance medley relay team. The quartet of Jacob Kernell, Chandler Wilhelm, Josh Conrad, and Jacob Caniford set a new school record of 9:55.57 as they finished seventh. They gained seven seconds from their previous run and set a D2 provisional mark in the process. That is the tenth fastest DMR race this season.

The teams will compete at the Kent State Tuneup next Saturday (Feb. 16).
