(PLAINFIELD, Ill.) – The Walsh men's tennis team picked up an impressive win by a 5-4 count over nationally ranked No. 39 Lewis at the Five Star Tennis Center Thursday afternoon. It was the first match for the Cavaliers (7-5) in the GLIAC/GLVC Crossover which is being hosted by the Flyers (6-5).
Not only are the Flyers ranked nationally, but they currently stand at No. 4 in the region as well.
The match was contested the entire way. Walsh picked up two points in doubles play at the second and third spots to gain the advantage. Pablo Cabezon and Carlos Jaque won at No. 2 doubles by an 8-6 score over Brendan Peterson and Andre Norasith. Tim Bruin and Jonah Carter added a win at No. 3 doubles by an 8-5 count.
Singles play was equally as the two teams equally split the six points. Walsh picked up wins by Cabezon at No. 3 singles, Jaque at No. 4 singles, and Rodrigo Garcia at No. 5 singles.
Cabezon took care of his opponent Norasith for the second time on the day by scores of 6-3 and 6-4. Jaque won by identical scores of 6-3.
The closest match of the day went to Garcia as he and Chandler Stimpert went to a third set tiebreaker. Garcia dropped the first set 7-6 with a 3-0 tiebreaker, but rebounded to win the second set 6-4 and the third set tiebreaker 10-7.
Walsh will resume action against the GLVC tomorrow and Saturday.
