(ALLENDALE, Mich.) – The Walsh men's tennis team competed in the Midwest USTA/ITA Regional Championships at Grand Valley State over the weekend and found success in various brackets. The duo of Pablo Cabezon (Sr., Santander, Spain/Calasanz Collegue) and Carlos Jaque (Sr., Chijuayante/Lycee Charles de Gaulle) turned in the finest performance as they advanced all the way to the semifinals in the A Doubles bracket.
Cabezon and Jaque made their way through the semis with wins over Lindenwood by a score of 8-3, Ferris State by a score of 8-2, and Grand Valley State by a score of 8-6. In the semis, the Cavs squared off against a team from Southern Indiana and served for the match. However Walsh dropped the serve and eventually the match by a score of 9-7.
In the B Doubles bracket, Heitor Adegas (So., Londrina, Brazil/Colegio Marista de Londrina) and Iagos Lucca (Jr., Caxias du Sul, Brazil/Colegio La Salle Caxias) advanced to the quarterfinals with an 8-6 win against a team from McKendree before they fell to a tough team from Southern Indiana 8-1.
The back draw of that same bracket saw Jose Fernandez (Jr., Sevilla, Spain/Instituto de Educacaion a Distancia) and Tim Bruin (So., North Canton, Ohio/Hoover) advanced to the semis with an 8-1 win against Truman State before an 8-6 loss to Southern Indiana.
Bruin also played well in the B Singles back draw. He came from behind to defeat an opponent from Lake Superior State 4-6, 6-0, 10-5 before playing in another tiebreaker that he won against a player from Davis & Elkins 6-2, 5-7, 10-8. He eventually lost to a player from Wayne State 6-3, 6-2.
The Cavaliers are now off until the spring. Their next scheduled match is a non-conference affair at Carnegie Mellon on Saturday, Feb. 6.
