(TAMPA, Fla.) – Despite the two teams being located in Ohio, Walsh and John Carroll met each other on the campus of the University of South Florida on Wednesday. The Cavaliers shut out the Blue Streaks 9-0 to improve to 7-8. JCU remained winless on the year at 0-7.
The doubles portion was played close by both teams. Pablo Cabezon (Jr., Santander, Spain/Calasanz Collegue) and Ross Whittaker (So., Massillon, OH/Lake) won their first doubles match by a score of 8-5. Carlos Jaque (Jr., Chiguayante, Chile/Lycee Charles de Gaulle) and Alex Portelance (Jr., Repentigny, Quebec/Felix-Leclerc) played an even closer match, but still won by a score of 9-7 at second doubles. Vasiliy Vidmanov (Fr., Prague, Czech Republic) and Jonah Carter (Fr., Maumee, OH/St. John's Jesuit) had an easier time at third doubles with an 8-3 decision.
In singles play, Vidmanov needed a third set tiebreaker, but eventually won 6-1, 3-6, 11-9. It was the closest match of the contest. Cabezon won at second singles 6-2, 6-4. Whittaker easily took the third singles pairing 6-2, 6-1. Jaque won fourth singles in a similar 6-1, 6-2 score. Iagos Lucca (So., Caxias du Sul, Brazil/Colegio La Salle Caxias) won 6-1, 6-3 at fifth singles, and Jose Fernandez (So., Sevilla, Spain/Intituto de Educacaion a Distancia) won 6-4, 6-2 at sixth singles for the shutout.
This was the final match for Walsh in Florida. The Cavs will return home and travel to the University of Northwestern Ohio for a match on Friday, March 13.
