(CANTON, Ohio) – Walsh started the conference season on the right foot with a 6-3 victory over Lake Superior State Saturday evening at the Hall of Fame Courts. The Cavaliers are now 8-2 overall on the season. The Lakers drop to 2-7 overall and are 1-1 in the GLIAC.
The Cavaliers went ahead after the doubles portion 2-1 as Ross Whittaker (Fr., Massillon, OH/Lake) and Iagos Lucca (Fr., Caxias du Sul, Brazil/Colegio La Salle Caxias) picked up a big win at the second spot by a score of 9-8 with a 7-5 tiebreaker. Louis Thomas (Sr., Canton, OH/Jackson) and Alex Portelance (So., Repentigny, Quebec/Felix-Leclerc) also earned a win at third doubles by an 8-6 count.
In singles action, Pablo Cabezon (So., Santander, Cantabria, Spain/Calasanz Collegue) put Walsh up 3-1 with a win in firsts 6-2, 6-4. The Lakers made a comeback attempt with wins at second and fourth singles, but the Cavaliers closed out the match with wins in third, fifth, and sixth singles. Thomas sealed the victory for Walsh's fifth point with a 6-2, 6-3 win. Carlos Jaque (So., Chijuayante, Concepcion, Chile/Lycee Charles de Gaulle) did well to overcome a first set defeat by a score of 6-1 to win the last two sets 6-4 and 6-0 for another Walsh point. Portelance was strong in his return to the lineup with a 6-0, 6-3 win.
The Cavs return to action bright and early with a match against Michigan Tech at 8 a.m. The contest will also be played at the Hall of Fame Courts in Canton.
