Swales' Goal Lifts Cavs Over Malone

(CANTON, Ohio) – Playing your biggest rival on the road for a conference opening game can be a big challenge, but Walsh passed the test with a 1-0 win against Malone on Friday afternoon. The Cavaliers are now 2-0 on the early season while the Pioneers, who were also playing in their first conference game, drop to 1-2.

The Cavs provided the game's only score early in the second half as they pressured the Pioneers. After being awarded a free kick on a foul, the ball was sent into the box where numerous Cavaliers had a chance to knock it into the back of the net. Malone's netminder Jon Crabbs made consecutive saves but couldn't get control of the ball.

Eventually Simon Swales found himself just a few feet from the goal with no one in front of him and easily sent the ball to the back of the net at 48:16. Brett Sparks was credited with the assist.

Both teams had excellent opportunities to score the rest of the way, but neither side could take advantage. Ayman Youssef came up with the clean sheet with nine saves on 28 shots faced. Meanwhile the Cavs peppered Crabbs with 22 shots with 12 being on target. Sam Mountstephens managed the most of them with all six of his shots being on goal.

Walsh will now turn its attention to California (Pa.) for a non-conference game on Sunday afternoon. The Vulcans will enter with a record of 1-1-1. Kick-off is set for 3:30 p.m. following the women's game against Daemen.
