NORTH CANTON, Ohio – Trailing 5-4 in the closing seconds of the third quarter against the Alderson Broaddus Battlers on Saturday (April 20), the Cavaliers men's lacrosse team flipped a switch for the final 15 minutes. Walsh scored nine straight goals in the final quarter in a 13-5 win over the Battlers on Senior Day.
With the win, Walsh ended the regular season 4-9 overall and 3-3 in the G-MAC. Entering the final week of the regular season, Walsh has a two-game lead over Davis & Elkins for the fourth and final seed in the G-MAC Tournament.
Alderson Broaddus started the scoring with a goal in the first three and a half minutes of the game. Grant Howard tied the game with an unassisted goal just under ten minutes remaining in the period. Over the next five minutes, the Battlers added two more goals for a 3-1 lead. Evan Bradley closed the lead to 3-2 with a goal in the final minute of the first quarter.
Senior Sean Cavanaugh tied the game on Senior Day of an assist by Kevin McMahon with 4:50 to go before halftime. Alderson Broaddus regained the lead less than a minute later, taking a 4-3 lead into halftime.
After a near ten-minute scoreless period, McMahon tied the game at four with an unassisted goal. With 29 seconds left in the third, the Battlers took back the 5-4 lead as we entered the fourth quarter.
The switch was flipped as the Cavaliers tied the game and took the lead in the first 2:15 of the fourth quarter. Evan Bradley assisted on the game-tying goal by McMahon and then assisted on the game-winning goal from senior Brydan Heisler. Tyler Stowell added two unassisted goals as six different players created distance between the Cavaliers and Battlers. McMahon scored a man up goal, assisted by Brent Mitchell before Marcus Brown scored a goal of his own. Anthony Munoz beat the defense for his first goal of the season prior to Cavanaugh's second goal of the day, assisted by Howard. Jake Cieszynski closed the scoring with 4:52 left with a goal.
McMahon led with four points on three goals and one assist along with four groundballs. Cavanaugh capped his Senior Day with a pair of goals while Stowell scored twice as well. Bradley finished with three points on one goal and two assists.
Patrick Cuddihy made 11 saves in the goal as he got the win.
Walsh will wait and see what happens in the final week of the regular season. With one Davis & Elkins loss, the Cavaliers should be clinched into the G-MAC Tournament.
