FINDLAY, Ohio – The Great Midwest Athletic Conference announced the 2018-19 Individual and Team Award winners in conjunction with the Men's Basketball Championship banquet on Thursday (March 7) at the University of Findlay.
Three Cavaliers players were honored by the conference coaches for their efforts this season.
For the second straight year, the Cavaliers have the Great Midwest Freshman of the Year. JT Shumate was chosen by the coaches as the top freshman in the league. Shumate also earned All-Conference First Team honors with his debut season. Shumate is tied for first in the conference in points per game with 19.2 points. Along with scoring, Shumate had 6.2 rebounds a game and 1.4 blocks a game. He is shooting 53.9% from the floor and 44.9% from three, ranking fourth and second in the conference, respectively.
Sterling Christy and Darryl Straughter were both named All-Conference Second Team. Christy averaged 13.2 points and 10.2 rebounds per game this season. He is second in the league with rebounds per game and field goal percentage (55.5%). With assists, Christy is eighth with 3.3 assists per game. He was right behind Shumate with 1.3 blocks per game.
Straughter is eighth in the conference with 16.2 points per game. The previous Freshman of the Year has the best free throw percentage in the G-MAC as he has made 82 of 90 free throws this season. He has the most three pointers made with 88 as he is shooting 41.9% from beyond the arc.
Christy also earned a spot on the All-Defense Team for the 2018-19 season.
The Cavaliers will face Hillsdale in the Great Midwest semifinal on Friday (March 8) at 8:00 PM.
