Preview: Men's Basketball Opens Roadtrip

NORTH CANTON, Ohio – The Walsh Cavaliers men's basketball team will open a four-game road swing beginning with games at Ohio Valley and Ohio Dominican this weekend.  

Walsh will play the Ohio Valley Fighting Scots on Thursday (Jan. 31) at 7:30 PM and then the Ohio Dominican Panthers on Saturday (Feb. 2) at 3:00 PM. 


Walsh has had much success against the two opponents this weekend. Walsh leads the series between the Cavaliers and Fighting Scots 10-0, including a 96-65 victory at Alumni Arena on Dec. 1st. The Cavaliers are 73-23 against the Panthers, winning the first matchup this season in OT, 77-69.  


  • Walsh improved to 13-7 overall and 8-4 in the G-MAC after a 92-56 victory over Davis & Elkins last Saturday (Jan. 26).  

  • The Cavaliers used runs of 14-0 and 22-1 throughout the game, pulling away from the Senators.  

  • Five different players scored double-figures in the game, including four starters. 

  • JT Shumate led the team with 17 points on seven-of-ten shooting. He leads the team with 18.2 points per game and is tied for third in the league. He ranks second of all D2 freshmen in points per game. He is shooting 50.7% from the floor, 41.7% from deep and 74% from the free throw line. Shooting 41.7% from three-point-range is ninth in the conference. He is also averaging 6.3 rebounds, the second-most on the Cavaliers. He leads the team with 31 blocks and is third in the conference with 1.6 blocks.  

  • Darryl Straughter scored 13 points with four assists. Straughter has an average of 15.6 points per game, second on the team behind Shumate, while playing 33.2 minutes per game (second in the G-MAC). He is the best free throw shooter in the G-MAC as he has made 90% (54-60) this season. With the Cavaliers being a three-point shooting team, Straughter leads the team with 58 made three pointers. He is tenth in three-point percentage (41.1%) and tied for fifth in three-pointers made (2.8).  

  • Sterling Christy had a double-double with 12 points and 17 rebounds. He averages 12.9 points and 9.9 rebounds a game. He ranks second in the conference and tenth in D2 with 198 boards. He grabs 7.7 defensive rebounds a game, second in the league and sixth in D2. Sterling is shooting 55.6% (109-196) from the floor, good for second in the G-MAC. He has 30 blocks, fourth in the conference.  

  • Reece Bogan added 12 points on four three pointers, He scores 9.3 points per game, where he mainly has scored from beyond the arc. He is second on the team with 55 threes. He is tied for fifth with 2.8 threes made per game. He ranks tenth in D2 with 163 three pointers attempted.  

  • Conner Wess scored ten points and is second in the G-MAC with a 3.1 Assist/Turnover ratio.  

  • As a team, the Cavaliers have scored 78.2 points per game (1,583), the fourth best scoring average of the conference. They are shooting 45.6% from the floor (5th best). 

  • On the defensive end, the Cavaliers have held teams to 67.6 points per game (1,351), the second lowest in the league. Walsh has held teams under the scoring average 14 times this season and have held teams to a shooting percentage of 40.5%, a league best. 

  • The Cavaliers control the boards as they average the third most rebounds in the conference, with 40.5 rebounds. They grab an average of 30.2 on defense and 10.4 on offense, ranking second and sixth, respectively. They rank 9th in D2 with 30.2 defensive rebounds a game.  

  • Walsh is the G-MAC leader with 215 three pointers made and that ranks 13th in all of Division II. They average 10.8 made per game and that is the most in the G-MAC. They also lead the conference with 586 attempts, the 10th most in D2. 

  • The Cavaliers rank fourth in Division II with 13.2 personal fouls per game and ninth in D2 with 10.2 turnovers per game. 


  • Ohio Valley is 6-11 overall and 2-10 in the conference following a 75-72 loss to Cedarville.  

  • Kenneth Miller is the leading scorer for the Fighting Scots, with 15.2 points per game. He is shooting 48.0% from the floor in 30.2 minutes per game. He is eighth in the conference with a 73.4% free throw percentage and is second in the league with 2.1 steals per game.  

  • Christian Alley scores 13.2 points per game while shooting a team-best 51.8% from the floor. He also leads the team with a 75.6% free throw percentage, sixth in the conference.  

  • David Adeyemo is the leading rebounder for Ohio Valley with 7.9 rebounds and 127 total rebounds. He is sixth in the G-MAC with rebounds per game, fourth with offensive rebounds a game (2.5) and eighth in defensive rebounds per game (5.4). He leads the conference with 3.4 blocks (55 total) per game.  

  • Ohio Valley has scored 1,263 points, an average of 74.3 per game (7th in the G-MAC) and have allowed 1,391 points, an average of 81.8 per game (12th in the G-MAC). 

  • The Fighting Scots are shooting 43.8% for field goals (9th), 34.6% from three (9th) and 71.7% (6th) from the free throw line. 

  • They average 36.7 rebounds a game (6th) with 29.9 defensive and 8.8 offensive. They rank 3rd in defensive rebounds and tenth in offensive boards.   


  • The Panthers are 12-7 overall and 8-4 in the conference going into the weekend. Ohio Dominican fell 79-63 at Cedarville but defeated Tiffin 83-69 on Saturday.  

  • Ohio Dominican has won 11 straight home games before hosting Malone on Thursday.  

  • Sam Hickey leads the Panthers with 17.0 points a game, sixth most in the G-MAC. He is shooting 44.2% from the floor and 80.4% from the free throw line.  

  • Hasan Varence averages a double-double for the Panthers with 15.6 points a game and 12.0 rebounds a contest. Varence is the top rebounder in the conference per game and second in total rebounds. He ranks third in D2 with 12.0 rebounds a game and third in the nation with 9.4 defensive rebounds (most in G-MAC). He is slotted sixth in the conference with a 52.2% shooting percentage.  

  • Ryan Hoyng is third on the team with 10.9 points a game on 55.2% shooting overall. He is best in the conference with a 51.8% three-point shooting percentage.  

  • Ohio Dominican averages 79.0 points a game, fifth-most in the G-MAC. They are third in the conference shooting 47.3% overall, 39.7% from three (2nd best) and 72.9% on free throws (4th).  

  • The Panthers allow 71.3 points per game, the fifth lowest scoring defense in the conference. They are allowing opponents to shoot 43.4% from the floor, and 32.1% from three, fifth and third, respectively.  

  • They are rebounding 40.8 rebounds a game, second most in the conference. The Panthers led the conference with 30.3 defensive rebounds per game.
