Straughter's 22 Points Paces Cavaliers in Victory

NORTH CANTON, Ohio – The Walsh Cavaliers men's basketball team bounced back from Monday's loss with an 81-65 victory over the Alderson Broaddus Battlers on Thursday (Jan. 24) night.  

JT Shumate scored four of the first six points for the Cavaliers, but the Battlers tied the game twice before the first media timeout. Walsh took an 11-8 lead on a Reece Bogan three pointer, then Alderson Broaddus nailed two straight threes. The Battlers took a 14-11 lead with 14 minutes left in the first half. Walsh worked back to tie the game twice on a three-pointer by Darryl Straughter and a Sterling Christy layup. Just like the first media timeout, the game was knotted at 18 at the under 12 media timeout. Trailing 21-20, the Cavaliers forced a Battlers timeout with a 5-0 run. A layup by Conner Wess and a Bogan three pointer gave the Cavs a 25-21 lead with 10:11 left before halftime. Branden Wilkins knocked down a step-back jumper after the timeout and Walsh led by six. Alderson Broaddus cut the deficit in half and the Cavaliers followed with back-to-back three pointers from Mark Mokros and Straughter. With a five-point lead, Walsh gained their largest lead of the first half with an 8-0 run. Four different players scored as the Cavaliers led 44-31 with 1:24 left before the half. Alderson Broaddus made a three before the break and trailed 44-34 at halftime.  

Caleb Canter scored the first four points for the Cavaliers as they regained a 48-35 advantage in the first two minutes of the second half. The Battlers cut the lead to nine until the Cavaliers pushed the lead to 12 with a three pointer by Wess with 12:31 left. Shortly after, Walsh got two three pointers from Bogan on a 10-0 Cavaliers run. Walsh's lead ballooned to 65-47 with 8:02 remaining. The teams went back and forth scoring two baskets at a time as the Battlers tried to battle back. The Battlers cut the lead to 13 but Walsh used a late 4-0 run by Will Parker to lead by 19 late. The Cavaliers weathered the Battlers with an 81-65 win.  

Straughter led the Cavaliers with 22 points, including four three pointers and four free throws. Bogan knocked down five threes for a total of 15 points. Canter was just shy of a double-double with 13 points and nine rebounds. Christy had 13 rebounds to go with his six points. 

The team shot 46.7% (28-60) in the game and outrebounded the Battlers 46-33.  

Alderson Broaddus was led by Mike Davis, who scored 14 points.  

Walsh will host Davis & Elkins on Saturday (Jan. 26) afternoon with a 3:00 PM start.
