PAINESVILLE, Ohio – The Walsh Cavaliers battled the Lake Erie Storm on Monday (Jan. 21) afternoon at the Osborne Center. Lake Erie defeated the Cavaliers 68-63.
After Lake Erie jumped out an early 2-0 lead, Walsh bounced back with seven straight points. JT Shumate nailed a three pointer and Sterling Christy added a three-point play and a free throw. The Storm responded with a 6-0 run before Caleb Canter knocked down a jumper for a 9-8 Cavaliers lead. The Storm made a three and the Cavaliers went on a 7-0 rally. Shumate added his second three ball of the day and Christy and Mokros each made a layup. Walsh switched a two-point deficit into a five-point advantage with 11:47 to go before halftime. Lake Erie took back the lead just after the halfway point of the half. Shumate had a tip-in off of an offensive rebound as the game was tied at 20 with 5:40 remaining. Following a Storm three pointer, Reece Bogan bookended a Cavaliers 8-0 run with three pointers as the Cavs led 28-23. Lake Erie trimmed the lead to one before Mokros scored six straight points. Walsh led 34-29 at the intermission.
Walsh pushed the lead to seven on a three pointer from Darryl Straughter. After Shumate made two free throws, Lake Erie jumped back with a 23-4 run as they gained a 59-45 lead with eight minutes to go. Caleb Canter added five straight points for the Cavaliers as they kept the Storm within 12. Lake Erie scored a basket and then the Cavaliers went on an 8-0 run. Darryl Straughter and Mokros each had a three pointer while Shumate added a layup. Walsh closed the gap to 64-58 with 3:34 left. Walsh had one last rally in the final minute where Bogan converted a three-point play and Shumate finished a put-back. The Cavaliers cut the lead to three with 14 seconds left but fell 68-63.
Shumate led the Cavaliers with 18 points while Mokros added 11 points off the bench. Christy had ten points and five rebounds. Bogan had nine points and six rebounds. Canter led the team with seven rebounds in the contest.
Walsh will look to rebound when they host Alderson Broaddus on Thursday (Jan. 24) at Alumni Arena.
