(CANTON, Ohio) – Walsh won another nail-biter in Osborne Hall with a 70-68 victory over Malone in G-MAC play on Saturday afternoon. The Cavaliers (11-4, 7-3) used a hot start and survived a late push by the Pioneers (12-7, 5-6) to preserve the win.
The Cavs started the game on fire and made 10-of-13 to start the game. After Malone made a 3-pointer to make the score 8-6, the Cavs went on a 14-3 run to take control of the game. At the break, Walsh shot 60.7 percent with 17-of-28 made from the field.
Most of the success on the offensive end came inside as Walsh outscored Malone 22-4 in the paint in the first half. That difference increased to 40-14 by the end of the game.
The Maroon and Gold offense was led by Chandler Vaudrin who scored a game-high 24 points on the day. He was 10-of-16 from the field with a 3-pointer. His 14 rebounds were also a game-high and helped Walsh edge the Pioneers 41-35 on the boards.
Vaudrin also assisted on seven baskets for the Cavs. Three of those went to Andy Lucien who added 17 points on 7-of-11 from the field. He pulled down seven boards in the win. Bo Furcron also reached double-figures with 14 points. Darryl Straughter turned in a solid effort with eight points and eight rebounds.
The Pioneers remained in the game thanks to their outside game as the hosts made 13 3-pointers in the game on 38 attempts. They were just 10-of-26 elsewhere for the day. Ty Jordan led the hosts with 17 points.
It's the 12th consecutive victory for Walsh over its neighboring rival. It's also the Cavs 11th consecutive victory in Osborne Hall. Both teams will meet again for the Mayors' Cup on Saturday, Feb. 17, for the Cavaliers' Senior Night.
Walsh will now host Wright State-Lake in its last non-conference game of the season on Monday. Tip-off is set for 7 p.m.
