Cavs Kickoff 24th Year Against Wayne State Thursday Night

(DETROIT) – The 24th season of Walsh football will kick off tomorrow night as the Cavaliers take on Wayne State in the Motor City. The former conference rivals are meeting each other for the fifth consecutive season and will open the year with each other the second year in a row.

Both teams come into the 2018 campaign riding a momentum wave that closed out last year. Walsh won four of its final six games, including its final two, while the Warriors won three of their last four, including their final two as well.

The Maroon and Gold will be under the guidance of first year head coach John Fankhauser. While it is his first year leading the team, he is by no means a stranger to the program. While this is the 24th season for the Cavs, this will be the 21st season Fankhauser will walk the sidelines after being a long-time assistant.

While Walsh and Wayne State have kicked off against each other the four previous years, this will be the first to feature two head coaches squaring off against each other that used to be former assistants under Wall of Fame Head Coach Jim Dennison.

Coach Dennison was the former front man at the University of Akron for 13 seasons before he made the move south to North Canton to start up the Cavalier program where he coached 18 more seasons. Fankhauser served under Dennison from 1998 retirement in 2012. The Warriors' Paul Winters served on Coach Dennison's staff in Akron as an offensive backfield coach and a graduate assistant for two seasons.
