Football Picked Fifth in GLIAC South

(BAY CITY, Mich.) – The 2016 Football GLIAC Preseason Coaches' Poll has been released and Walsh is picked to finish fifth in the South Division.

The GLIAC's defending co-champion Ashland took the top spot in the division with five of six first place votes. National semifinalist Grand Valley State is picked to win the North Division with five of eight first place votes.

The Eagles garnered 25 points in the voting to take the top spot. Ohio Dominican and Tiffin tied for second with 19 points as the Panthers picked up the remaining first place vote. Findlay edged the Cavaliers slightly for the fourth spot with 13 points. Walsh was picked fifth with nine points and Lake Erie rounded out the division in sixth with five points.

The Lakers secured 47 points to edge the other defending co-champion Ferris State with 45 points and the remaining three first place votes for the top spot. Michigan Tech was picked third with 35 points. Wayne State (30), Hillsdale (21), and Saginaw Valley (16) were picked fourth, fifth, and sixth, respectively. Northern Michigan and Northwood tied for seventh with 15 points each.

The Cavaliers open the season with the first of two trips to the Upper Peninsula against Michigan Tech on September 3. They follow that up with a road trip to Hillsdale before playing Saginaw Valley in the home opener on September 17.

Along with Hillsdale and Saginaw Valley State, Grand Valley State is also another new team to grace the Walsh schedule in 2016. All games except for one will be GLIAC contests. The lone non-conference game comes against Malone who joined the Great Midwest Athletic Conference this season. The annual rivalry game against the Pioneers will be Walsh's homecoming game and is scheduled for October 22 at 6 p.m.
