MASON, Ohio - The Walsh University Cavaliers baseball team played two games on the opening day of the 2019 Great Midwest Athletic Conference Tournament at Prasco Park and Legacy Field on Wednesday (May 8). Unfortunately, the Cavaliers fell to Trevecca Nazarene and Ohio Dominican, ending the 2019 season.
Walsh dropped the opening game to the Trevecca Nazarene Trojans 4-2 and then fell 8-1 to the Ohio Dominican Panthers in the elimination contest.
Walsh opened the game with two runs in the top of the third inning, striking first against left-hander Jake Roberson. After two two-out walks, Eric Conner lined a RBI single to left center field, scoring a run. Andrew Czech followed with a RBI double as the Cavaliers led 2-0. Trevecca tied the game in the fourth inning with a two-run single. The Trojans added a run in the fifth and the seventh inning, taking a 4-2 lead.
Six different players had a hit for the Cavaliers. Conner, Czech, Avery Janning, Brenden Spaulding, Jarret Lyon and Cobe Hutchison each had a hit in the game. Czech and Bailey Mosley worked a pair of walks each.
Just like game one, Walsh jumped out to an early lead. In the first inning, Czech doubled with two outs and came around to score on a RBI single by Janning. The Panthers plated four runs in the second and one in each of the fourth and sixth innings. Ohio Dominican added two runs in the seventh inning for an 8-1 victory.
Czech, Janning and Holiga each had a pair of hits, while Spaulding and Hutchison accounted for one hit for each one.
Walsh ended the season with a 27-24 record.
