COLUMBUS, Ohio – The Walsh Cavaliers baseball team traveled to Panther Valley for a four-game series this weekend. A tree delay extended the series to three days as the Panthers took two of the first three games with the series finale coming Monday.
Walsh took the single nine inning game on Saturday (April 27) 10-5. The teams played two seven inning contests on Sunday (April 28) as Ohio Dominican won both on walk-off hits, 2-1 and 6-5.
Walsh scored two runs out of the gate in the first inning on an RBI single by Brendan Spaulding and a bases-loaded walk by Joey Holiga. Ohio Dominican scored one run in the second and three in the third, taking a 4-2 lead over the Cavaliers. Spaulding cut the lead to 4-3 with his second RBI single of the game in the fifth inning. In the bottom half of the fifth, the Panthers got a run back making it 5-3 with four innings to go. Walsh scored seven straight runs over the final four innings. Andrew Czech added an RBI fielder's choice and Avery Janning gave the Cavaliers a 6-5 lead with a two-run single in the sixth inning. A four-run eighth inning pushed the lead to 10-5. Czech hit his fourteenth homerun of the year, a two-run shot before Cam Kaiser plated an RBI single and Holiga added a sacrifice fly.
Walsh had 13 hits in the opener of the series. Spaulding had three hits and two RBI. Four players managed two-hit games against the Panthers. Bailey Mosley had two hits, a walk and two runs scored. Eric Conner reached base three times (two singles and walk), leading to three runs. Janning finished with two hits, two runs and two runs batted in. Cobe Hutchison added two hits and a walk. Czech had three RBI in the game.
Czech opened the first game on Saturday with his 15th homerun of the year, a solo shot as Walsh led 1-0. Ohio Dominican scored one inning later, tying the game at one. Both teams threw zeroes on the scoreboard until the Panthers walked off in game one in the seventh inning, winning 2-1.
Czech accounted for the only run on one hit as Walsh had four hits in the contest.
Nick Bebout took the tough-luck loss as he allowed two runs (one earned) on six hits and one walk with seven strikeouts in 6.2 innings.
Ohio Dominican took a 2-0 lead after the first inning of the second game on Sunday. Walsh used a five-run third inning to take a 5-2 lead. A run scored on an error before Conner blasted a two-run homerun to right field, giving Walsh a 3-2 lead. Spaulding and Holiga added RBI singles as the lead became 5-2. Ohio Dominican scored three runs in the fourth inning and won the game 6-5 on a walk-off single in the seventh.
The Cavaliers finished the game with nine hits. Czech went three-for-four with a double and Conner had two hits and two RBI.
The final game of the series will take place on Monday (April 29) at 2:00 PM at Panther Valley.
