INDIANAPOLIS, Indiana - The Great Midwest Athletic Conference had four Athlete of the Week winners from Walsh University as we roll into full Spring season mode across six sports.
Kevin McMahon and Jake Cieszynski were honored from men's lacrosse, Mikaela Faus was a women's lacrosse AOW and Sofia Khairutdinova was women's tennis Athlete of the Week.
McMahon and Cieszynski swept the men's lacrosse awards as Offensive and Defensive Player of the Week, respectively.
McMahon was one of many driving forces in the Cavaliers' 18-8 win over Wheeling Jesuit in the conference opener on Saturday. The junior attack led the Cavaliers with seven points on five goals and two assists. In the second quarter, he scored four goals with three consecutive goals coming in a three minute span.
Cieszynski dominated the faceoff game as he won 21 of 27 faceoffs for Walsh, while picking up 13 groundballs. On one faceoff in the first quarter, Cieszynski quickly scooped up the ball and dished it to an open Evan Bradley for a quick Cavaliers goal.
With the women's lacrosse team on a four-game winning streak, Faus has been solid in the goal last week. She combined for 23 saves and 11 groundballs in two home wins for Walsh. Against Lawrence Tech, the senior goalie made six saves and snagged seven groundballs. On Friday versus Charleston, Faus stopped 17 of 28 shots by the Golden Eagles.
Khairutdinova became the definition of clutch for the Cavaliers last week in two key conference wins over Findlay and Tiffin. She won the sixth singles match in order to seal 4-3 wins against the Oilers and the Dragons on both days. Against Tiffin, the sophomore was down 3-0 in the decisive third set before winning six straight games for a 6-3 third set victory. She was a 6-1, 5-7, 6-3 winner over Shea Foster.
