(YOUNGSTOWN, Ohio) – No. 19 Walsh opened the track & field season today at Youngstown State's Icebreaker Invitational. The Cavaliers had impressive performances with familiar names appearing at the top of the results.
One of those was six-time All-American Sarah Berger. Fresh off of a second place finish at the national championships for cross country, the senior won the 5,000 meter run with a time of 16:53.34 to set a new school record. She easily won the event by over a minute and is well on her way to qualifying for nationals yet again as it beat the provo mark.
Maggie Kroll and Katelyn Luther also ran in the event and finished third and fifth, respectively. Kroll clocked in at 18:38.25. Luther came in at 19:06.48.
In field events, Payton Breehl finished third and Malia Turley was fifth in the weight throw, while Morrisa Mallory was seventh in the shot put. Breehl's best throw was 14.89 meters. Turley's best was 14.74 meters. Mallory reached 12.82 meters in the shot.
