(NORTH CANTON, OHIO)- Walsh (13-9, 2-0) wins two in their Great Midwest Conference opener against the Fighting Scots of Ohio Valley (2-14, 0-2). The Cavaliers ended the first game early by way of the run rule defeating OVU 8-0. Game Two was a little closer as the Cavaliers won by score of 4-2.
Walsh jumped out to the early lead in Game One on a double by Hailey Warren scoring Alex Depue who reached earlier in the inning on a single. Back to back singles by Abbey Yaugher and Annie Dehnke scoring Jessie Rock and Warren gave Walsh a 3-0 lead. In the third, another Warren double scored Annie Woolf who reached on a free pass. Yaugher singled up the middle scoring Warren. Kirsten Reed came off the bench and singled up the middle to score Yaugher. A pass ball in the sixth scoring Dehnke was all the Cavaliers needs to finish off the Fighting Scots.
Olivia Pifer got the win in the circle for the Cavaliers striking out six and scattering four hits for the six-inning shutout.
Back to back homers in the second inning by Yaugher and Dehnke got the Cavaliers going in Game Two. The other two Cavalier runs came in the fourth after a hard ball off the bat of Roten to shortstop scored Yaugher and Dehnke.
A trio of Cavaliers pitchers threw in Game Two to seal the victory. Shelbi Gregg started the game going two innings striking out three and giving up two hits. Ryan Kuula went 4.2 innings picking up the win, striking out one. Pifer picked up her second save of the year recording the final out of the game.
Dehnke was a perfect 5-5 on the day with a homerun, double and two walks. Yaugher was 5-7 with a homerun and three RBI.
The Cavaliers game against Ashland for tomorrow has been postponed. The Maroon and Gold are back in action at home Tuesday against Alderson Broaddus. First pitch is set for 3 p.m.
