(NORTH CANTON, Ohio) – Another fast start helped Walsh go undefeated on the opening weekend with a 3-1 victory over Roberts Wesleyan on a hot Saturday afternoon. The Cavaliers (2-0) scored their first two goals in the first 15 minutes and staved off a comeback attempt by the Redhawks (1-1).
A pair of penalty kicks helped the Maroon and Gold score the aforementioned pair of goals as Dwight Van Dyke and Myles Cornwall found the back of the net. Van Dyke's initial attempt was saved, but the ricochet went right back to him and he swiftly rang true on the live attempt. Less than a minute later, Cornwall was awarded a PK opportunity and made it 2-0.
The Cavs couldn't get too comfortable as the Redhawks didn't take long to light up the scoreboard themselves as Alex Perez scored on the assist from Daniel Maxwell in the 23rd minute.
Walsh then capped the scoring in the first half and consequentially the game with a score by Wesley Burton from Dan Kenner in the 32nd minute. Roberts made a push in the second half as it outshot the Cavs by six, but Brett Ekperuoh made all three saves that were on target during that time.
Coach Andy Hoggarth's crew now hits the road to start G-MAC play with the short jaunt up to Lake Erie. Kickoff is set for 7 p.m. Tuesday in Painesville.
