(NORTH CANTON, Ohio) – The first game in the series with Malone didn't go as well as Walsh had hoped as it fell 7-2 at Biery Stadium on a sunny Friday afternoon. The Cavaliers (19-15, 12-7) and Pioneers (24-13, 13-6) were tied for fourth place in the North Division entering the day and will play two more tomorrow afternoon.
The Pioneers ended up striking first with a pair of unearned runs in the third before a grand slam put the visitors up 6-0 in the fourth. Walsh eventually countered with its only two runs in the sixth on the strength of back-to-back solo home runs by Eric Conner and Andrew Czech.
The Cavs were able to load the bases and threaten in the next inning, but all three runners were left stranded.
Nick Bebout was charged with his first loss of the season to drop him to 4-1. He struck out five on the day.
The Cavs and Pioneers will play a doubleheader tomorrow with the first game scheduled for seven innings followed by a nine inning contest. First pitch is set for 1 p.m.
