(SANFORD, Fla.) – Spring break ended for the Walsh baseball team with a narrow 8-7 defeat to former and future conference rival Tiffin at the Historic Sanford Memorial Stadium on Saturday afternoon. The Cavaliers (6-6) rallied to score four runs in the final two frames, but fell just short against the Dragons (5-5).
Down 8-3, Head Coach Tim Mead's crew started the rally with three runs in the eighth. Avery Janning brought in the first with a double to left field that allowed Cobe Hutchison to score. One batter later, both he and Andrew Czech scored on an error by Tiffin's shortstop to make to pull within two.
Hutchison made the score 8-7 in the ninth with a single to left field that allowed Jared Houser to score. Houser was pinch running for Jacob Beachy who doubled to center earlier in the frame. Tiffin followed with a pitching change and retired the next two Cavaliers to secure the win.
Walsh initially went up 2-0 after scoring a run in the each of the first two innings. Czech brought in the first on a single to right that scored Marcus Bobb. Hutchison then scored in the second on a wild pitch.
After Tiffin followed with the next four runs in the second and third, Bobb singled in Beachy in the top of the fourth to make it 4-3 in top of the fourth in favor of the Dragons. A grand slam in the bottom of the fifth provided Tiffin what ended up being the game-winning margin.
Luke Miller took the loss to fall to 1-1 on the season.
Overall the Maroon and Gold outhit Tiffin 13-7 on the day. Hutchison was 3-for-4 on the day with Bobb, Conner, Janning, and Beachy also recording multiple hit days.
The Cavaliers will play Tiffin twice more this season with both games being nine-inning contests in a home-and-home series.
Walsh will return to action next week when it heads to Nashville for a twin bill with Trevecca Nazarene University on Friday. From there the Cavs will head to Owensboro, Ky., to take on Kentucky Wesleyan on Saturday.
