(LAKELAND, Fla.) – With a 5-4 victory, Walsh improved to .500 and took the series sweep from Notre Dame while on spring break at Polk State College on Thursday. The Cavaliers (5-5) did so in come-from-behind fashion with a pair of runs in the sixth to tie the Falcons (2-8) before going ahead in the bottom of the eighth.
After Notre Dame held the early advantage after scoring in its first at-bat before regaining the lead and adding to it in the third and fourth, Avery Janning provided the game-tying hit with a single to center. The bases-loaded hit easily brought in Andrew Czech and Eric Conner for the 4-4 tie.
Czech was also responsible for the game-winning RBI as he popped a sac fly to left field that allowed Marcus Bobb to plate the go-ahead run after he led off the frame with a triple to center.
Bobb helped get Maroon and Gold bats started in the second as he hit a single to right to score Joey Holiga. Jacob Beach advanced to third on the play and later scored on a sac fly by Conner.
Bobb, Janning, and Holiga all had multiple-hit days. Czech also found himself on base most of the day as he drew three walks.
MJ Nara recorded the win in relief after pitching an impressive eighth inning. He faced four batters and struck out three of them with the other reaching base on a walk. Ben Bulchik took the hill in the ninth and pitched a perfect inning for his first save of the season.
The Cavaliers are now 5-2 in spring break with two games remaining. The first of those will come tomorrow against former conference rival Ashland back at the Lake Myrtle Sports Complex. First pitch is scheduled for 9:15 a.m.
