(MARSHALL, Minn.) – Walsh's Austin Szink and Ryan McSweeney both have been named All-American Honorable Mentions as the icing on the cake of their incredible baseball careers. Szink earned accolades by both the National Collegiate Baseball Writers Association (NCBWA) and D2 Conference Commissioners Association (D2CCA), while McSweeney was honored by the NCBWA.
It's the first time anyone on the Walsh baseball team has earned All-American honors since Ben Biery was named after the 2000 season.
Szink has also been named as an All-GLIAC, NBCWA All-Midwest, D2CCA All-Midwest, and ABCA All-Midwest First Team selections. McSweeney was an All-GLIAC, NBCWA All-Midwest and ABCA All-Midwest First Team selection in addition to a D2CCA All-Midwest Second Team selection.
Szink was named an honorable mention as a catcher as a threat at the plate both on offense and defense. His .648 slugging percentage is fifth in the GLIAC and his 13 home runs are fourth. He also has 53 runs scored for seventh in the GLIAC, and is seventh in RBIs with 45 and total bases with 116. Szink sports a perfect fielding percentage and has caught 12 runners stealing, second-best in the conference.
McSweeney was named an honorable mention as a relief pitcher. When the starters left the game, McSweeney was called upon as the team's closer and delivered with nine saves, second-most in the GLIAC. He had a 0.91 ERA in 29.2 innings pitched over 17 appearances. Despite being a reliever, McSweeney still racked up 31 strikeouts for a 9.4 average per nine innings. He was the deciding pitcher five times this season with a 4-1 record.
